Bridge with the Doria Castle, Italy Art on Canvas | Wall Art #W014
The origins of the Doria Castle are not known with certainty, though the first historical references to this edifice are made for the 13th century. It is highly likely the castle with its imposing tower were built as part of the Vernazza system of fortifications commissioned by the Genovese during the early Middle Ages. The Castle was erected on a steep outcrop, and given its location, as well as the structural additions it acquired in time, it has a pretty irregular shape.
It is overtopped by an impressive tower, said, amongst others, to be the oldest part of the entire architectural complex. Located in the center of the castle’s esplanade, the tower offers stunning views of Venanazza. The tower is locally known as the Belforte. It underwent significant restoration works in the 20th century.
